Me and My Brown Paws

Hello, I’m Ann of BrownPawsQuilting.

This is me and my pup Bucky.  He’s my bud.

This is the whole (canine) furry family – Leo (BrownPaws), Bucky, and our corgi Maggie.  The cats chose not to participate in the family photo.

I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico and work as an engineering manager.  I’ve been quilting for about 20 years, but started my blog just under a year ago.  I’ve really enjoyed meeting new people via the blog and via social media, and have learned so much in the past year – both about blogging and about quilting.   This group will be my first try at a Bee, and I’m anxious to figure it all out!

You can read more about me on my page and on my New Bloggers Blog Hop stop.   Some quick hits:

  • We spend a lot of time in Pagosa Springs, Colorado.  This is my sewing location when I’m there (it is a small place so I only do cutting and piecing there):

  • I changed jobs about 6 months ago, leaving a place I had been for 23 years.  It has been quite an adjustment and I’m working hard to keep focus on my sewing!
  • I also recently bought a long arm, which was something I wanted to do for a long time.  Now I am working up a very steep learning curve.  This quilt is my first quilt top I’ve finished on the long arm.  It is a bow tie quilt top I made several years ago and figured it would be a good one to start playing with:

  • I used to do a lot of work with dying fabrics and using those fabrics in my quilts.  I haven’t done as much of that recently, but I do really love working with the colors.  This is my wedding quilt I made several years ago.  I had people sign the light purple pieces at the reception.full-quilt

  • I also enjoy reading (mainly audiobooks right now), music, Star Wars, and am a very large University of Wisconsin Badger fan – hence the dog named Bucky!

These are two recent things I’ve been working on…

The Sugar Block Club 3.0 blocks – blocks are all done, just need to figure out a layout…

Embroidery blocks for a Moda Bake Shop Pattern called the Bee-utiful Quilt-a-long.  The embroidery has been fun.  So far I’ve completed twelve of the twenty total blocks.

Thanks for adding me to the group – I look forward to getting to know you all and working on our blocks!

  1. Thanks for sharing! It is great to get to know more about you. I can’t believe I wasn’t following your blog before. I am now! You’ll have to let me know how that new longarm has been treating you. I have been considering one for awhile now.

    • Hi Jen, thanks so much for your comment, and for the follow. So far I’m enjoying the long arm, but it’s really only been a month. I’ve been trying to get in at least 30 minutes of practice every day, and that is helping me to get comfortable with it. I hope to use it a lot this year!

  2. Hi welcome to the BEE. I love your dogs and your quilt photos. We are poodle parents. We have a 4 year old large Standard named Tigg and our brand new baby Théo is a small standard. He is only 9 weeks old. He came home today.

  3. Oh wow, congrats on the puppy! We got Maggie when she was a puppy – like 8 weeks – and it was really a long year. She was (is) a menace and not terribly interested in being trained. Good luck! Thanks so much for your kind comments about my dogs and quilts.

  4. Lovely reading about your dogs, I have two working type springer spaniels, very high energy. I love the pic of yours. I noticed you had a knee lift on your machine and wondered if you use it much, I’m trying mine again just now but the jury is out.

  5. Hi Kate – thanks for your kind comments about my pups. Yes, I have a knee lift on both machines. It was a new feature for me when I got my Bernina in ’98. It took some time to get used to, but now I struggle to do without it. I think it is especially useful for doing appliqué or sewing curved seams. Give it some time – I think you will like it.

  6. Hi Ann! So glad you’re a part of this group. Love the dogs but miss the kitties. Wish they’d agreed to be in the family photo.

  7. Hello Ann! So happy to meet you here in blog-land! Your dogs look like great companions. I am a cat person, and cannot imagine not having my Bella around to keep me company. I would love to have more, but my sweet hubby is allergic….so glad he loves cats too! That is what they make allergy medicine for….right???

    • Hello Sharon! We are both cat and dog people, but the dogs are easier to get photos of. Currently we are down to only 2 cats – Sophia and Sarafina (Saffy). Both like to help, but Saffy is my shadow. Always there to offer insight and test quilts!
